Applicants Sought for SMUMC Scholarships (Deadline: June 13)

The Endowment Scholarship Committee is seeking all 2021 high school graduates to apply for the Saint Matthews Endowed Scholarship. Applications can be obtained from Mrs. Carolyn Burgman by email. All eligible students must be admitted to an accredited four-year college or two-year community college. Additionally, students must be a member of Saint Matthews and are currently active in church programs or activities. All applications must be returned to Mrs. Burgman or Dr. James Sibert by June 13, 2021. 

Volunteers Need: Great American Cleanup (May 1)

Volunteers are needed to help clean up Greensboro on Saturday, May 1. Members of the Care for Creation (C4C) Ministry from West Market Street UMC will be working along with the Creation Care Ministry at Saint Matthews UMC to pick up litter at Latham Park and Stream North. A volunteer agreement form will be provided closer to May 1.

Greensboro Beautiful community clean ups give our community a spring cleaning by picking up litter from streets, neighborhoods, waterways — anywhere that needs cleaning up. Visit www.greensborobeautiful.org for more information.

In-person Worship Services to Begin May 2

Welcome back! Saint Matthews will open the doors to the church for in-person worship services throughout the month of May. 

Dates and Times 

  • May 2, 9 and 30 – 10 a.m. service + social media and Zoom 
  • May 16 and 23 – 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. services + social media (Zoom for 11 a.m. only; social media for both) 

Basic Logistics 

  • All persons entering the church will be required to wear a mask while inside. 
  • If without a mask, one will be provided. 
  • If unable to wear a mask, an invitation to worship online at home or another location will be extended. 
  • Main double doors (Florida Street) will be used as the entrance, while Britton Street and breezeway doors will be used as exits. (Handicap Accessible Parking will be in the MLK Street Parking Lot with the breezeway as an accessible entrance.) 
  • All persons will be asked to sign in upon entry and have their temperature taken. A Google form has been developed for our webpage and email to sign in prior to coming to church. 
  • Collection baskets will be located inside the church for depositing offerings on the way in or out. Envelopes will be at the door. 
  • Communion cups for the first Sunday (May 2) will be provided upon entry. (Please dispose of cups as you exit the building.) 
  • It is imperative that ushers be allowed to dismiss the congregation according to the guidelines in place. 
  • The church is starting with “worship only” and will reevaluate after the third Sunday in May.

Student Recognition Day (June 13)

On Sunday, June 13, Saint Matthews will honor its members in the 2021 high school, college and post-college graduating classes. Please complete the form in the Sunday Bulletin and return it with a picture (preferably in your cap and gown) to Carolyn Clarke or the church office no later than May 16. 

Great American Cleanup (April 17-May 2, updated)

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS! 

Help us clean up Greensboro with the Great American Cleanup, April 17-May 2. Please sign up by clicking on Great American Cleanup. 

How it works: 

  • Get a group of 10 or less. 
  • Choose your own cleanup site or select a litter hot spot. 
  • Sign up to tell us where you are cleaning between April 17 and May 2. 
  • Take pictures before and after, share them and tag Greensboro Beautiful’s Facebook or Instagram. 
  • Put your litter bags in your own residential trash can. 
  • Greensboro Beautiful also partnered with Litterati. Please download the Litterati app, use the Challenge Code — 991080 — to put litter on the map. 
  • Email your photos, report the number of bags, how many people participated and amount of time for your cleanup to us when you are done.

Gardens for Good (Deadline: April 7)

By April 7, please visit www.naturespath.com/en-us/gardens-for-good to vote for the Community Garden at SMUMC. THe top 21 supported garden projects will be eligible for grant monies to grow organic food and provide nourishment for those in need. Let’s touch lives for Jesus Christ! — Karlah Burton

Earth Month Challenge (April 2021)

Join a month-long adventure in April to become more connected to the Earth and live sustainably. This challenge is sponsored by the Greensboro Public Library.

To participate:

  1. Email melanie.buckingham@greensboro-nc.gov to receive an Earth Challenge Guide;
  2. Complete two challenges in each group and record it on the challenge card; and 
  3. Email the card by May 7 to melanie.buckingham@greensboro-nc.gov.

Participants will be entered in a drawing for a gift basket of Earth-friendly goodies. 

Earth Day is April 22.

Low Income Energy Assistance Applications (Deadline: March 31)

Applications for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) are being accepted through Wednesday, March 31. Families may qualify from $300 to $500, depending on their situation and eligibility. Funds are available to assist families with a onetime payment to their energy provider for heating purposes. Applicants can apply online at www.epass.nc.gov or by calling the Guilford County Department of Social Services at 336-641-3000. 

Free Food Boxes (continues thru June 12)

The Guilford CARES: Feeding the Community Food Drive launched Feb. 6, and the goal of is to distribute 500 boxes of food biweekly for 10 weeks, totaling 5,000 boxes, from different alternating locations throughout the county. Each box is designed to feed a family of four and will include enough food for two weeks and include meat and fresh produce.

The churches and nonprofit organizations participating as distribution locations include:

  • Feb. 6 – New Zion Missionary Baptist Church (Greensboro)
  • March 6 – Hayes-Taylor YMCA (Greensboro)
  • March 20 – Shiloh Baptist Church (1210 S. Eugene Street, Greensboro 27406)
  • April 3 – Crossover Community Church (711 Knightdale Avenue, High Point 27263)
  • April 17 – Calvary Baptist Church (808 Hilltop Street, High Point 27260)
  • May 1 – First Baptist Church (1000 W. Friendly Avenue, Greensboro 27401)
  • May 15  – Lawndale Baptist Church (3505 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro 27408)
  • May 29 – Open Door Ministries of High Point (400 N. Centennial Street, High Point 27262)
  • June 12 – Second Harvest Food Bank (2517 Phillips Avenue, Greensboro 27405)

Funding for this program comes from the county’s COVID response initiatives approved by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners during their Dec. 14, 2020, meeting. At the request of Commissioner Carolyn Coleman, the board set aside nearly $300,000 from federal funds received for this initiative to help address food insecurities.
